Guwahati, March 19: Bhogali Jalpan, Assam's iconic brand in the traditional food sector, aims to go global by 2022.

"Plans are under way to do it by 2022, the year which would mark the silver jubilee celebrations of the company," Ajit Sarmah Baruah, founder of Bhogali Food Products Private Ltd, told The Telegraph today. He said the company was fixed on its global goals and was opening a food laboratory to increase research and development. It also plans to open a restaurant to strengthen its foothold in this sector.

"We want to be the best in quality so that our products reach the stage to be exported across the shores," he said, adding that the company was aiming for a Rs 25-crore turnover by 2022.

Baruah said the food laboratory would guide the company in designing and packaging food products for the future.

"The food products will not only be for the Assamese spread out globally but for everybody," he said.

The Rs 5-crore company, which is known for its Bihu delicacies, has a major market in Guwahati, Mangaldoi, Nalbari, Jorhat, Golaghat and Sivasagar. It has around 2,000 retail counters in the state.

It today announced its plans to make its products available in Mumbai, following its tie-up with NorthEastDelicacy.com - a Mumbai-based online portal dedicated to the procurement and delivery of traditional food products, tea, handicrafts and other products from the Northeast in Mumbai.

The next step is Bangalore and work is under way.

"We have taken our first step towards reaching out to our customers on a national level. With Rongali Bihu, the biggest festival of the Assamese community, next month, we could not think of a better gift for the Assamese people in Mumbai," he said.

Assamese people staying in different places in the country have always spoken of missing traditional Assamese products, especially during Bihu. "We are looking forward to engage franchisees, who can help us reach out to the masses," he said.

The company has around 35 products on offer. Baruah said they are looking for Rs 2 lakh business monthly from the Mumbai venture.

NorthEastDelicacy.com is an initiative by Baby Borah and Mouchumi Dutta, residents of Mumbai for over 10 years. "Our business establishment is based in Navi Mumbai and we are trying to bring the flavours of the Northeast to Maharashtra," an official of the online platform said. The company had opened a distribution network in Jorhat in October last year.

Simanta Sarma, owner of Axomi restaurant, an Assamese speciality restaurant in Bangalore, said, "This is excellent news and there is a great opportunity for Assamese food globally."
