Tura, Oct. 23: The power of democracy and the right to vote was propagated at an awareness programme held at Tura Super Market yesterday.

The programme was part of the systematic voters education and electoral participation for the summary revision, which is currently under way.

It emphasised encouraging the group comprising school students, persons with disabilities turning 18 on or before January 1 next year and others, to get themselves enrolled as voters on the lines of the motto of the Election Commission - no voter to be left behind.

West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi spoke at the programme and urged young people to enrol themselves to vote. He also highlighted the importance of voter ID cards.

"We have to be informed voters and make a conscious decision to vote," Bakshi said.

He urged all the citizens wishing to enrol as well as those desiring to make corrections or deletions to furnish proper documents in support of their claims and objections to ensure an error-free electoral roll, scheduled for final publication on January 10 next year.

Several campaigns are being held in different parts of West Garo Hills to propagate the message for summary revision of photo electoral rolls. The administration is propagating the message in the weekly markets of the district to reach out to the rural masses.

The last date for submission of enrolment form is October 31.

"A door-to-door campaign has also been initiated by the booth-level officers in respective polling stations," Bakshi said.

The disposal of claims and objections will take place in November and update of database, merging of photographs, update of control tables and preparation and printing of the supplementary list will be done by December.
