Guwahati: Police on Monday rescued an injured woman from the Gorchuk area here. She was unconscious and the police suspect she was sexually assaulted.

The woman, who appeared to be in her thirties, has been admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). She was found just half a kilometre from Gorchuk police station.

Police said she is a resident of the Basistha area of the city and works for an automobile dealer here. Medical examination has been carried out and the reports are awaited. "Till now she has not been able to reveal anything about what happened, except her name and address," deputy commissioner of police (Guwahati West), B.L. Meena, told The Telegraph.

The officer-in-charge of Gorchuk police station, Ranjit Das, said, "We found her in Narakashur Path. We met her son, who had contacted us. He said his mother went missing last evening. First he thought she might have gone to a Bihu programme. He tried to contact her several times, but her mobile was switched off. He approached the police when he found her phone switched off even in the morning."

A case was lodged late Monday on the basis of the complaint filed by the son of the victim. "She is under treatment under police guard in the gynaecology department, but is not out of danger," superintendent of GMCH Ramen Talukdar said on Monday. No one has been detained in this connection.

According to the police, the woman has been working with the firm since 2010. She is separated from her husband, a resident of lower Assam's Barpeta district, and lives with her 16-year-old son.

The incident follows a series of such assaults in Assam over the past few months. The Assembly also took note of the incidents after BJP legislator Angoorlata Deka raised the matter and was supported by all woman legislators, cutting across party lines. After a special discussion, the government resolved to adopt stringent laws to deal with such crimes against women.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has requested Gauhati High Court to set up fast-track courts in every district to deliver quick justice to victims along with assurance to increase number of women personnel in Assam police. The state government has also launched a helpline number for women.

Between April 2016 and January 6, 2018, altogether 3,009 cases of rape, 17,103 cases of physical harassments and 9,108 cases of abduction of women were registered in Assam. In connection with rape cases, 1,786 accused have been arrested and chargesheets have been filed against 1,697 accused of whom 76 have been convicted.

On Monday, in an interactive session with residents in Dibrugarh town, Sonowal expressed concern over rise in crimes against women in the state. He urged people to unite against such crimes as women enjoy special status in society.
