Voice of India Debojit Saha speaks about his trip to the Bangladesh capital

When I landed in Dhaka in the middle of last week, I was taken aback by the heat and humidity of the place. But my discomfiture was quickly replaced by the warmth of the people. I was overwhelmed by the love and affection showered on me. It was quite an experience.

But the real surprise for me was when I performed at Dhaka’s Nandan Park on Friday. It was absolutely fabulous to perform in front of thousands of people, mostly youngsters. Nandan Park is an entertainment hub like Nicco Park in Calcutta and the atmosphere was simply great. I was later told by the organisers of the show that there were around 20,000 people to hear me sing.

It was as if I was performing in front of my home crowd in Silchar. I sang mainly Hindi songs in keeping with the audience’s requests but also put in an odd Assamese song. Bollywood films and songs are big hits in Bangladesh.

I recalled my 1991-92 visit to Dhaka. At that time, Debojit Saha was still an unknown name but then too I had got a very favourable response. But this time, the crowd response was beyond my expectations.

A trip around Dhaka on Saturday was also an eye-opener to me. I was impressed by whatever little I saw of the city. The opulence in Dhaka is mind-boggling, with glittering malls and swanky shops lining the streets. One interesting thing I found is that they sell fresh fish in the malls. But then, given the Bengalis’ love for fish that was quite expected.

Back home, the musical reality show Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar has reached a very crucial stage. From the next episode, the contest will be among the top eight. I am quite pleased with my performance in the past seven episodes and people are appreciating my performance.

At this crucial stage, I hope to give my best and will not disappoint my fans. But in this kind of competition performance alone will not make you a winner. You need to get adequate votes too.
