Dibrugarh, Nov. 1: The Dibrugarh district unit of the All Assam Students’ Union staged a demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner’s office here today, to protest against the soaring prices of essential commodities.

Around 200 members of the students’ union carried placards and shouted slogans against the ruling government.

The Congress-led UPA government has failed miserably to curb the price rise, a member of the students’ union said.

AASU members have held food and civil supplies minister Nazrul Islam responsible for the unprecedented price rise.

The union called for stern action against middlemen, hoarders and blackmarketeers, saying the thriving nexus was at the root of the escalating prices.

“Unless the government takes effective measures to curb price rise, we will intensify our agitation,” said Ranjan Dhadumi, adviser to the district unit of the union.

The union has asked the food and civil supplies department to take steps to control the price rise, he said.
