Guwahati, March 19: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to play spoilsport in the poll battle of three Congress leaders’ scions — Gaurav Gogoi, Manas Bora and Sushmita Dev.

Gaurav is the son of chief minister Tarun Gogoi while Sushmita is the youngest daughter of former Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev. Manas is the son of Assam social welfare and jail minister Akon Bora. The three have been fielded by the Congress in Kaliabor, Silchar and Gauhati constituencies respectively.

Sushmita is the present Congress legislator from Silchar.

AAP leader and its state campaign committee member, Gurpreet Singh Uppal, told The Telegraph today that they were working out specific campaigns against the three candidates as they represented Congress’ practice of “dynasty politics”. “We have been fighting for change in our country’s political system. Fighting corruption, ending dynasty politics and brining in swaraj (decentralization of power) are our dream. But changing our political system is not possible until we stop electing the sons and daughters of our politicians instead of voting an able candidate. Democracy cannot be a family business,” Uppal said.

The AAP has announced its candidates for seven of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. The candidates are Azad Hussain in Dhubri, Tapan Sutabanshi in Dibrugarh, Pranjal Bordoloy in Gauhati, journalist Manorom Gogoi in Jorhat, Tarun Kumar Das in Karimganj, Namrata Sharma in Mangaldoi and Hiramoni Deka Sonowal in Lakhimpur.

“Pranjal Bordoloy is a good candidate. We will soon take a decision about candidates for Kaliabor and Silchar. During door-to-door campaign, we will try to make the voters understand that these dynasty politicians just want to rule and not serve people,” Uppal said.

Congress sources, however, downplayed the AAP’s warning. The three are young, well-educated and gained experience before getting into electoral politics, they said. Chief inister Tarun Gogoi, too, recently supported his son’s candidature stating that Gaurav was given ticket for his work.

Sushmita’s father Santosh Mohan Dev was a seven-time Lok Sabha member from Silchar but had lost the election in 2009. BJP’s Kabindra Purkayastha is the present MP. Manas Bora’s election as a Congress candidate in Gauhati under Rahul Gandhi’s primaries programme, however, was opposed within the party because of corruption and criminal allegation against his father, Akon Bora.
