Q: A neighbour who lives two plots away from our house is building a huge pandal for his daughter’s wedding in our lane, extending along five houses on either side.
Only the structure has been built so far, as the wedding is a fortnight away. But even this is creating inconvenience for the residents living along the stretch.
The lane being a dead-end, thoroughfare is not a problem.
But a bamboo pillar, for instance, posted in front of our gate has dissected the path and this is creating problems for my aged mother who goes out for a walk every evening.
What is most annoying is that this neighbour has not had the courtesy to inform us that he is building this pandal using our space.
We got to know of his daughter’s wedding from the maid and have not even received an invitation till date.

A: Your problem is, indeed, a sad commentary on the times we live in. People have become so self-centred that nothing seems to exist beyond individual interests.
It is indecent of your neighbour to have put up the pandal’s structure without having informed those who would be inconvenienced by it. He also does not have any right to put up a structure — even if the lane is a dead end — on a public road. Usually, when anyone decides to put up a pandal on the road, he takes the consent of those he might be causing inconvenience to. It seems he has thrown decency to the winds.
In such a situation it might be best if all those affected approach him and talk it out.
If nothing comes of it, I think it would be best if a complaint is lodged with the authorities.
I understand it does not feel good to put a spanner in the works of a wedding, but such blatant disregard for others should also not be overlooked. All the best.
