Jorhat, June 15: Forty-five students from the Northeast, who attended classes at Oil India's Super 30 centres, have made it to IITs.

Altogether 93 students of these centres in Guwahati, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Itanagar had appeared for the Joint Entrance Exam advance after clearing the mains.

The results of the JEE advance was declared on Sunday. These 45 students are slotted for counselling in the IITs.

"There was a time when hardly a handful of students from the Northeast made it into the IITs," said Sukanya Bharadwaj, senior project manger, OIL Super 30.

"But with the Super 30 centres opening in the region, the numbers has been increasing and children from economically weaker sections. who could not afford a costly coaching facility at Kota in Rajasthan or some other place, are now being able to see their dreams come true," she added.

OIL has set up a centre in Jodhpur (Rajasthan) from which all 30 had passed the mains and 29 have qualified the advance exam.

Bharadwaj said of the four centres in the Northeast, Jorhat has done the best with 15 of the 24 mains-qualified making it to the IITs.

In Dibrugarh, of the 23 mains-qualified, 12 cleared the advance exam, in Guwahati seven of 23 have passed and in Itanagar 11 of 19 have qualified. The Jorhat centre has also achieved the highest ranks with Licha Talo and Toko Tadh of Lower Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh and Japhungshar Brahma from Chirang district of Assam achieving the 50th, 63rd and 61st ranks in the ST category, respectively. "The Super 30 initiative was launched by Oil India Limited in association with Centre for Social Responsibility and Leadership in 2010. It gives an opportunity to underprivileged but talented students to fulfil their dreams of becoming an engineer," Sukanya said.

The project runs for 11 months with free residential coaching by experts in physics, chemistry and mathematics under the mentorship of Abhayanand, former director-general of Bihar who is the founder of the Super 30 concept.
