Guwahati, Sept. 1: Twenty-five sportspersons will be felicitated for representing India in the year 2009-10 on the 27th Abhiruchi Sports Day here on Friday.

Prominent players in the list include swimmer Fariha Zaman, boxer Shiva Thapa, footballer Alen Deuri, cricketer Krishna Das, shuttler Anjali Kalita and archer Jayanta Talukdar.

Arjuna awardee Monalisha Baruah Mehta will flag off the traditional mass jogging from the Chandmari flyover to Nehru Stadium, said organising body chairman Balendra Mohan Chakraborty.

The day is observed to mark the birthday of the first Arjuna awardee from Assam, Bhogeswar Barua.

Promising shuttler Ashmita Chaliha and taekwondo player Alary Gayari will be conferred the Gopal Baruah upcoming sportsperson award. All-rounder Romario M. Sharma will receive the Dilip Choudhury Upcoming Cricketer award.

Athletics coach Mohan Boro has been named recipient of the Raj Baruah coach’s award while Brajen Gohain will receive the Sashi Sarma organiser’s award.

Besides, five senior organisers — Bipin Chandra Deka, Sunil Baruah, Trailokya Bhagawati, Mahanta Kumar Kalita and Danda Kumai — will be felicitated on the occasion.

Telecom giant Bharti Airtel will be the title sponsor for the central programme for the second consecutive year.
