Ranchi, Feb. 8: The 56-acre residential complex, which has been lying in various stages of completion since 2009 at nearby Hotwar, today looks new and ready to host over 7,000 sportspersons and officials of the 34th National Games.
Sports secretary Sukhdev Singh is leaving nothing to chance, the fiasco in Delhi before the start of the Commonwealth Games acting as a warning. No wonder he personally supervised clean-up operations at the complex, 8km from Ranchi, till around 3am today.
“Yesterday, we were told that 99 per cent cleaning had been done. But the claim turned out to be a farce. Ultimately, we had to deploy an additional 500 labourers on our own,” said Singh, who came back to Khel Gaon this morning again around 11am.
Some work is pending. “It will be over by this evening,” he promised confidently.
Khel Gaon today was certainly a far cry from what it was yesterday: garbage littered all around, pan and gutka stains on staircases, dirt and mud-clogged water towers, and unclean rooms.
Now, things are finally falling in place. They better. For, players and athletes are coming in from tomorrow. In fact, IOC chief Suresh Kalmadi is to welcome a contingent from Assam tomorrow.
There are 1,200 flats to host around 7,000 visitors. “These include two and three BHK flats, penthouses and cottages. After the Games are over, another 600 flats will be built in the second phase,” said Shankar, marketing officer, Nagarjuna Real Estates, a subsidiary of Nagarjuna Construction that built the residential complex situated near the Mega Sports Complex.
The builder swears by the design. “Construction area is only 60 per cent while 40 per cent is open space. As a result, there is ample fresh air and light. Not many residential complexes can boast of this today,” claimed Shankar.
Players will be put up in two and three BHK flats while officials will find space in penthouses or cottages.
