Ranchi dancer tops music exam

Budding Bharatnatyam dancer Poulomee Sinha has topped the seventh Sangeet Ratna examination conducted by the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad, Calcutta. A student of Class XII at DPS, Satellite Colony, she started learning dance at the tender age of four and at present is training under noted Bharatnatyam guru Krishna Beni Prasad. Daughter of Praveer Sinha, a tabla player, Poulomee had sit for the examination from Jawaharlal Nehru Kala Kendra and will soon receive her gold medal from the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad for her performance.

For Poulomee, dance is more than just her passion, it helps her to focus on other aspects of life as well. ?It has never affected my studies. In fact it has helped me in it,? she said.

The budding artiste looks up to Rukmini Devi as an ideal. Poulomee is not one to rest on her laurels, she has now started kathak lessons as well from Indrani Mukherjee. And for this multi-faceted person academic is equally important. ?I am appearing in the joint entrance examination for engineering this year. But I am not going to leave dance at any cost,? she said.

Concert cancelled

?Gharowa? has cancelled its regular cultural evening scheduled to be held on May 27 as one of its active and respected member Uttam Thakur was injured in a road accident. Thakur, a senior tabla player, was going to attend a Rabindra Jayanti funcion at Morabadi on May 9. ?Though he has been discharged from the Raj Hospital, he still needs his rest,? said Nilratan Ghosh of the organisation. The organisers have also postponed the annual music conference, which was supposed to be held in June. Now the conference will be held in August.

SpicMacay

SpicMacay delegates from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro will leave for Manipal to participate in the 20th annual convention which will be held at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education from May 24-28. The inaugural concert will be performed by Ustad Bismillah Khan and Shiv Kumar Sharma. Besides classical concerts, there will be folk performances, seminars, yoga, meditation, film screenings, and theatre performances during the annual convention, to be inaugurated by Karnataka Governor T.N. Chaturvedi.

Forthcoming events

• Prajwalit Vihar will organise a programme at the Birsa Chowk in Ranchi, featuring folk performances on May 28.

•The Dhanbad district administration will organise Dhanbad Kala Utsav featuring classical and folk performances by artistes from June 3-5.
