The department of mining engineering of IIT(ISM) has found global recognition.
The latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University rankings ranked the department 24th among the top mineral and mining engineering departments and universities of the world.
The results of the QS rankings were released on Tuesday.
The IIT(ISM) department is the only Indian university or department to find a place among the top 25 mining and mineral engineering departments.
The department, which secured 66.40 overall points, improved its position from previous ranking of 51, last year, due to its increased points in various indexes like academic reputation, citation per paper, employer reputation and Hirsch index citation.
Colorado School of Mines stood first in the QS ranking among mineral and mining engineering departments and universities while Curtin University, University of Queensland, Pennsylvania State University and The University of New South Wales stood second, third, fourth and fifth.
The department secured 72.0 points on academic reputation, 73.4 points on citations per paper, 50.5 points on employer reputation index and 58.9 points on H-index citation.
Associate professor of department of mining engineering of the institute Dhiraj Kumar said, "A host of reasons, including the increased interaction of the department with foreign universities like Curtin University of Australia, increased number of industrial projects undertaken by the department, increased number of publications by faculty members in international journals led to the improvement in rankings."
The global ranking would not only improve reputation of the department, but also ensure increased funding for the IIT(ISM), better collaboration opportunities with foreign and Indian institutes and universities, increased industrial collaboration and better placement opportunities for the students of the department.
QS World University Rankings, an annual league table of the top 600 universities in the world, is arguably the best-known and respected rankings of its kind. IIT(ISM), formerly ISM, was set up in 1926. It offers courses such as BTech, MTech, integrated MScTech, among others.
