Ranchi: Enforcement Directorate on Thursday attached a four-star hotel in Morabadi owned by Rose Valley Group of Companies that is being investigated for allegedly running ponzi schemes that have left thousands of Jharkhand investors in the red.
Park Prime hotel at Anand Gram, sources said, is said to be worth Rs 70 crore in its books, but its market value is around Rs 150 crore. ED believes it was bought by the company using the money collected from investors in 2013.
The hotel is registered in the name of Chocolate Group of Hotels, a company spun off by Rose Valley with Bibha Kundu and Vinod Kumar as directors. Bibha is the mother of Goutam Kundu, the proprietor of Rose Valley Group.
ED assistant director Swapan Bose, enforcement officer Amit Kumar and Naresh Kumar Dasoundhi, all belonging to ED's Ranchi sub-zonal office, arrived at the hotel at 12.30pm and put up an attachment notice at its entrance.
"Earlier, the hotel was attached by ED provisionally. Today (Thursday) was the permanent attachment in connection with one of the chit fund cases being investigated by the West Bengal unit of ED. This now stands as the property of ED," said a senior ED officer.
In July, ED had attached property worth Rs 293 crore in the form of six hotels and one amusement park in Assam, Bihar, West Bengal and Tripura.
Sources said in the case of Park Prime, ED had taken "constructive possession" until further court orders. All income and other monetary benefits accrued by the hotel would henceforth be deposited in an account held by ED.
However, ED officials did not comment whether Chocolate Group of Hotels would be allowed to run the hotel. Even employees of the hotel weren't sure about their fate.
"We are continuing with bookings. We have not received any directive from our head office. We don't know whether it will be shut down in the coming days," said an employee.
In Jharkhand, Rose Valley was among the 30-odd chit fund companies that allegedly amassed deposits of over Rs 2,500 crore, especially in Santhal Pargana district and mining and industrial areas.
