DC nod to digital traffic lights

Dhanbad deputy commissioner has cracked the digital whip on rogue drivers and reckless bikers.

Kripanand Jha on Wednesday instructed Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) and other concerned departments, including Public Works Department and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), to install traffic signals at every major squares across the district to streamline vehicular movement.

The instructions were given during a 90-minute meeting of the district traffic task force at the district collectorate from 11am. Apart from deputy commissioner Jha, subdivisional officer Mahesh Kumar Santhalia, DSP (traffic) Ashok Tirkey, district transport officer (DTO) Ravi Raj Sharma and executive engineer of DMC Indresh Shukla were present on the occasion.

The traffic signals are proposed at Jay Prakash Chowk, Bank More, Birsa Munda Chowk, Shramik Chowk, Mahatma Gandhi Chowk near Combined Building, Randhir Verma Chowk, Steel Gate Chowk, Gold Building Saraidhela Chowk and Puja Talkies Chowk.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Jha said apart from installing new traffic signals, the existing ones would also be repaired after conducting technical assessment of their present status.

But, before installation of traffic signals, the road authorities concerned will paint zebra crossings at the respective sites.

Speaking to The Telegraph, executive engineer of DMC Indresh Shukla said, "Installation of traffic signals will be initiated by issuing tenders soon after the completion of zebra crossings."

Besides installing signals and painting the zebra crossings, the deputy commissioner also asked the district police to remove encroachments from the busy squares.

Jha also told traffic police personnel to ensure better management at major squares by ensuring auto-rickshaws and other public vehicles halt only at designated stoppages.

Following the meeting, DSP (traffic) Ashok Tirkey visited different places and cautioned auto drivers to abide by traffic norms.
