A picture says a thousand words.
Twenty-seven students from nine cradles showed their concern towards the environment by placing the right piece of picture at the correct position and giving an apt caption for it.
The occasion was an inter-school collage and caption competition, organised by members of International Library and Cultural Centre (ILCC), and held on the club premises on Wednesday.
The three-hour-long competition was part of an awareness programme for environment protection, water conservation, waste management, pollution control and healthy living.
From each cradle, there were three students of Classes IX to XII and topic for the contest was how do you see the world environment of the future if we don't change our ways.
Judges geologist Nitish Priyadarshi and ILCC members Anjum Modi and Nivedita Sharma were impressed with every piece of art and more amazed to see how much concerned and conscious the city youngsters are.
Oxford Public School walked home with the first prize while Bridgeford Public School and Surendranath Centenary School were adjudged second and third, respectively.
"We should be very careful. Our environment is under threat and it is only we, the youngsters, can protect it. Expressing our thoughts through words and pictures are fine. But we need to convert these thoughts and ideas into actions as well," Arpita Kumari, a ninth grader from Oxford Public School.
Judge Priyadarshi said animals were always adjusting to our ever-changing environment. "But we, human beings, instead of adjusting with the nature, try to spoil it. Of all the evils, the depleting water level in the state capital is indeed alarming. We need to conserve water for our future," said the geologist.
Jyoti Bajaj, deputy managing trustee of ILCC, said the competition was organised to sensitise students about environment issues. "A lot of changes are taking place. It will have repercussion on our future generation. So, why not sensitise them from this age so that they can protect the environment?" she added.
