Calcutta, May 13 :
The leader of a kidnappers? gang was killed and four policemen, including a deputy commissioner, were injured in a shootout near Akashvani Bhavan late this evening.
Deputy commissioner, central division, Raj Kanojia, who was leading the policemen, said four armed youth, led by Sheikh Dinesh, arrived in the Burrabazar area in a dark blue Maruti a little before 7 pm. The killed gangster was later identified as Dinesh.
?Their intention was to kidnap a businessman from the area,? the police officer said. Dinesh, aged around 30, was behind the kidnapping of two promoters ? Pradip Sahu and Vivek Chatterjee ? on separate occasions earlier this year. He was also wanted in connection with several other crimes.
Acting on a tip-off received at the Burrabazar police station, several policemen, including assistant commissioner U.S. Lahiri and officer-in-charge Shasanka De, stationed themselves along Brabourne Road, dressed in mufti.
They spotted the car around 7.30 pm and gave chase. Kanojia, who was waiting with his team near Raj Bhavan, was informed over wireless that the criminals were headed that way.
The car was intercepted on Auckland Place near Akashvani Bhavan at 8 pm. The area, which is also near the Netaji Indoor Stadium, comes under the jurisdiction of Hare Street police station.
Seeing that they were cornered, the criminals stopped the car, got down and opened fire from pipe guns at the police teams.
One of the shots shattered the windscreen of Kanojia?s Tata Sumo police car. The windscreen shards injured the deputy commissioner and three other policemen.
The policemen fired back from their service revolvers. One of the youth fell, seeing which the others started throwing bombs.
Under cover of the smoke and commotion, the three remaining youth got back into the car, made a U-turn and fled at breakneck speed to Strand Road, turning left towards the second Hooghly bridge.
At least six rounds were fired by the criminals and 10 bombs hurled, three of which did not burst.

Acting chief minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya today condemned the police for picking up National Insurance upper division clerk Manabesh Ghosal from his residence at midnight on false charges. The minister had earlier defended the police action, saying they did not misbehave with Ghosal. The insurance official has lodged a complaint with the state Human Rights Commission, alleging that he was tortured at the New Alipore police station.
He said the police would have done well had they waited for a few more hours for dawn to break and then called Ghosal to the police station. He explained that though police have the right to pick up anyone at night, Ghosal?s case was not serious enough to warrant such an action.
Bhattacharya said that since the rights panel is conducting an inquiry into the incident, the state would wait for its report. ?If it accuses the police and recommends punishment, we shall not hesitate to comply with it,? he said.
