Lucknow, April 18:
Two of the seniormost ministers in the Kalyan Singh Cabinet, Lalji Tandon and Kalraj Mishra, met outgoing Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, seeking his ?permission? to resign if the Uttar Pradesh chief minister was not removed, top political sources have said. They were accompanied by state BJP president Rajnath Singh.
Tandon, who is the urban development minister, has been Kalyan?s chief detractor. Tourism and PWD minister Mishra has also become a vocal opponent of the chief minister.
Both ministers met Vajpayee after learning that BSP leader Mayavati?s decision to oppose the confidence motion in the Lok Sabha was prompted by the inability of the BJP?s national leadership to meet her demand for Kalyan?s dismissal. They said had the leadership been more pragmatic and realised the significance of a change of guard and a long-term understanding in Uttar Pradesh, it would have ?survived in Delhi and revived in Lucknow?.
Sources said the Prime Minister advised the three leaders to exercise restraint and said he would give the Uttar Pradesh situation his utmost attention.
After the meeting with Vajpayee, the dissident group of MLAs and MLCs decided to hold back releasing a strongly-worded resolution today. About 30 MLAs and three MLCs decided not to mount fresh pressure on the central leadership for another ?two or three days?.
According to party sources, the resolution stated ?wellwishers? of the BJP were ?deeply-pained? that a major reason for the fall of the Vajpayee government was related to an important political decision in Uttar Pradesh.
The dissident group, which calls itself the ?Wellwishers?, has even appointed high-profile MLA from east Uttar Pradesh, S.S. Dang, as its spokesman. He told reporters after the meeting: ?We are extremely pained that a Uttar Pradesh-related issue caused the downfall of the government. We are, however, confident that the central leadership will take an appropriate decision at the right time.?
Meanwhile, Kalyan has shut himself away from public view since he returned from Delhi last night. He has refused to talk to the media and even official files are not being disposed of. He called a meeting of trusted ministers, including Om Prakash Singh and Hukum Singh, which went on till early this morning.
It is learnt that the chief minister has been asked to keep a close watch on political developments in his state, especially if the Loktantrik Congress decides to withdraw support, requiring dissolution of the Assembly.
The political focus has now shifted to Uttar Pradesh to see if the BJP government, in its most crucial state, will be its next casualty.
It is becoming increasingly apparent that a safe passage for Kalyan Singh is unlikely.
