Actor Anupam Kher recently took a walk down memory lane, revisiting the places he spent memorable moments in Mumbai during his 40-year-long career as an actor.
The 69-year-old actor took to his official Instagram handle on Saturday to pen anecdotes and drop pictures of him visiting his old accommodations and workplaces.
“Life is a sum total of struggles, memories and nostalgia… 😍Thank you for the love that you are giving #Vijay69, now streaming on Netflix. It got me emotional and I decided to visit a few places that has shaped me into becoming who I’m,” the actor wrote.
Anupam Kher made his acting debut with Mahesh Bhatt’s drama film Saaransh in 1984. Sharing a photo of the place where he stayed in Mumbai during the time he was filming Saaransh, the actor wrote, “Casa Maria on St Paul’s Road is my third house in the city. This is during Saaransh (my debut film in 1984) and I was staying on the first floor.”
The film — also starring Rohini Hattangadi, Madan Jain, Nilu Phule, Suhas Bhalekar and Soni Razdan — has bagged several accolades including the National Film Awards.
Next, the actor wrote about the theatre auditorium Bal Gandharava Rang Mandir situated in Bandra, which was his first workplace after arriving in Mumbai in 1981. “Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, (Bandra West) The first place I worked at when I came to Mumbai on June 3rd 1981 for a job in an acting school. Then I discovered that actually there was no building or a place or an acting school! we were conducting classes on the beach,” the actor wrote alongside a picture of himself standing in front of the theatre hall.
He also wrote about Prithvi Theatre in Bandra, where Anupam Kher started his life as an actor in Mumbai. In this auditorium, the actor has done some of his crucial plays as a theatre actor including Satish Kaushik’s Us Par Ka Nazara, Eugene O'Neill’s Desire Under the Elms, John Osborne’s Look Back In Anger and Javed Siddiqui’s Salgirah.
Kher also shared a picture of the first apartment he bought in Mumbai. The actor wrote, “Kalumal Estate, Juhu: this is the first one bhk flat, B23 at Kalumal Estate juhu, that I bought.”
The actor concluded by writing about two other places, Shastri Nagar and Kherwadi, where he used to live during his early days in Mumbai while he still was struggling as an actor. “Shastri Nagar, Santacruz Linking Road Extension: The place I lived in - at Shastri Nagar Linking Road extension between 82 to 83, I lived with four people. We used to sleep on the floor and there was no fan! I can never forget those days. Kherwadi: I lived in Bandra East, Kherwadi in 1981 with four people,” he wrote.
Anupam Kher will be next seen in the political biopic-drama Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut. Based on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the film is slated to release on January 17, 2025. The film also stars the late actor Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair and Milind Soman in pivotal roles.
