Tumbbad re-release trumps Kareena Kapoor Khan’s The Buckingham Murders on first weekend

The Rahi Anil Barve-directed supernatural horror film minted Rs 7.34 crore nett in three days

Upon its re-release, the 2018 horror film Tumbbad outperformed Kareena Kapoor Khan’s The Buckhingham Murders at the domestic box office, earning Rs 7.34 crore nett over the weekend against the latter’s Rs 5.31 crore nett, according to latest trade reports.

Tumbbad, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and starring Sohum Shah, had earned Rs 3.25 crore nett on its opening weekend in 2018. The film’s re-release this year has not only surpassed its collection on debut weekend but has collected more than half of its lifetime earnings of Rs 13.48 crore nett reported back in 2018.

According to the makers, Tumbbad earned Rs 1.65 crore nett on Friday, followed by Rs 2.65 crore nett on Saturday and Rs 3.04 crore nett on its first Sunday of re-release.

Reacting to the positive response from the audience, producer-actor Sohum Shah wrote, “Forever grateful! .”

Written by Mitesh Shah, Prasad, Rahi Anil Barve, and Anand Gandhi, Tumbbad is set in a village cursed with eternal rain after its residents built a temple for Hastar, the demon god. The narrative centres on a man’s pursuit of a cursed ancestral treasure.

Tumbbad is facing competition from Kareena Kapoor-starrer The Buckingham Murders. The Hansal Mehta-directed murder mystery minted Rs 1.15 crore nett on Day 1, followed by Rs 1.95 crore nett on Saturday and Rs 2.15 crore nett on Sunday, as per industry data-tracking portal Sacnilk.

Meanwhile, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Stree 2 had a phenomenal fifth weekend in theatres, minting Rs 16 crore nett from Friday to Saturday. The total domestic earnings of the Amar Kaushik-helmed comedy horror film now stands at Rs 580.18 crore nett.
