The lady in "Kanjeevaram keds" returns to sway Calcutta Club

You can always rely on Usha Uthup for an evening to remember. And she delivered just that at Calcutta Club presents The Last Dance partnered by The Telegraph on July 2. “I’ve been singing in Calcutta for 45 years,” she said, “and it’s always nice to come back to Calcutta Club. The men here are better looking than Richard Gere and the women prettier than Jennifer Lopez!” On her bindi was embossed the Bengali alphabet ‘K’ as well as on the locket at the end of her necklace, and on her lips were James Bond tracks Diamonds Are Forever and Skyfall. Some old favourites on her playlist included Stand By Me, La Bamba, Can’t Buy Me Love, Blue Suede Shoes and many more.

Usha’s sense of humour permeated the songs when she inserted her own tuppenny bit into the lyrics. “In the glass I saw a strange reflection. Was that lonely woman really me? … Say no, no, no,” she urged an amused audience.

When she sat down to show off her “Kanjeevaram keds”, the members took to the dance floor to sway to, well, Sway. The other footbusters were Senorita and Kolaveri di.

“This will be one of the last events for the present committee, which explains the name The Last Dance. The evening could not have gone better. We had a full and enthusiastic house despite the inclement weather,” said Suvojit Guha, president of Calcutta Club.
