Yesterday’s Song Is Today’s Film. A T2 List Of Bolly Songs That Are Now Movie Titles Published 11.06.13, 12:00 AM

YEH jAWAANI HAI DEEWANI

The film: The Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone romance by Ayan Mukerji is a delightful mix of youth, friendship, dreams and coming-of-age. No wonder it is smashing one box-office record after another, powering into the Rs 100-crore club within a week of release. The song: The title track of Jawani Diwani (1972) was created by RD Burman and sung by Kishore Kumar. The foot-tapper was filmed on Ranbir’s uncle Randhir Kapoor riding a bike and chasing Jaya Bhaduri’s car. t2 trivia: A romcom called Jawaani Diwani — A Youthful Joyride starring Emraan Hashmi and Celina Jaitley released in 2006. It lasted less than a week in theatres.

yamla pagla deewana

The film: Friday witnessed the release of Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. Like the sequel, the first film, starring Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby Deol in 2011, was a mindless mashup of age-old gags and stale jokes.

The song: Picturised on Dharmendra, the superhit number from Pratiggya (1975) was sung by Mohammed Rafi to Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s tune. Dharmendra’s fun ‘dance’ steps — as he the Jat went pagla and deewana — about Hema Malini — are copied on film and floor even today.

t2 trivia: The number was reprised in Yamla Pagla Deewana, with Sonu Nigam attempting a cover version.

kai po che!

The film: A story of friendship tested, lost and rediscovered set against social and political strife, this Abhishek Kapoor film opened won critical and commercial acclaim.

The song: Salman Khan kicked up a storm in the Kai po che number from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, co-starring (then) real-life love Aishwarya Rai. Picturised at the kite-flying festival — Kai po che means ‘I have cut’ in Gujarati — the song from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 1999 romance became popular for Sallu’s killer moves and Ash’s light-eyed charm.

t2 trivia: Soon after the title was announced, Chetan Bhagat — Kai Po Che is based on his book The 3 Mistakes of my Life — had a Twitter contest inviting Twitterati to guess the meaning of the title.

jab tak hai jaan

The film: Yash Chopra’s last film grossed Rs 100 crore-plus powered by the Shah Rukh-Katrina chemistry, Anushka Sharma’s lively presence, A.R. Rahman’s tunes and above all the Yashji touches. And yes, we loved SRK’s sexy stubble.

The song: Who can forget Basanti dancing on shards of glass to keep Veeru alive in Gabbar’s den in the classic Jab tak hai jaan song from Sholay back in 1975? Lata Mangeshkar’s pain-filled — or painful, depending on how you hear it — voice and RD Burman’s tune.

t2 trivia: The title of Yashji’s swansong was locked barely two months before release.

ek main aur ekk tu

The film: The Kareena Kapoor-Imran Khan starrer that travelled well from Las Vegas to Mumbai was a really refreshing

romcom that showed that a boy and a girl can just be friends — even in a Bolly film.

The song: Filmed on Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, the evergreen tune from Khel Khel Mein (1975) became a youth anthem. We loved: Rishi’s boyish charm (that’s where Ranbir gets it from) and Neetu in cute pigtails and short skirt.

t2 trivia: Before cousin Kareena was signed on as the lead, Ranbir Kapoor was considered for Imran Khan’s role. That would have been a movie moment worth a million: RK Jr reprising his parents’ magic, 37 years on.

ekk deewana tha

The film: Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson’s real-life romance wasn’t strong enough for this wishy-washy love story to stay afloat beyond its first week. Only Rahman’s soulful Hosanna worked.

The song: The image of Rishi Kapoor playing the violin with heart and soul as scenes from his previous birth flash before him brought alive the Kishore Kumar song from Subhash Ghai’s reincarnation saga Karz in 1980.

t2 trivia: Besides Ekk Deewana Tha, the title of another film has been derived from this song — Sriram Raghavan’s Saif Ali Khan-Urmila Matondkar thriller Ek Hasina Thi.

dil toh baccha hai ji

The film: Madhur Bhandarkar deviated from his tried-and-tested

real-to-reel formula in 2011 to come up with a film about the lives and loves of three bachelors. Blah.

The song: Sexy met saucy in this Vishal Bhardwaj song rendered by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in which Vidya Balan’s femme fatale seduces Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi in Ishqiya (2010).

t2 trivia: Even as the sequel to Ishqiya is being shot — Madhuri Dixitand Huma Qureshi join Naseer and Arshad for Dedh Ishqiya — Madhur Bhandarkar is said to be toying with the idea of Dil Toh Bachha Hai Ji II. Blah and blah.

zindagi na milegi dobara

The film: Zoya Akhtar directed Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and brother Farhan in this fun and fresh film about three friends and their moments of truth.

The song: The title came from the title track of Rock On!!, Farhan’s debut film as actor in 2008. Both films had the same theme — of being alive to each moment and not giving up on one’s dreams.

t2 trivia: While the song — written by Javed Akhtar — had the words “milegi na”, it was changed to “na milegi” for the film’s name.
