Life isn’t fantastic after all in Barbie World as Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie and Ken land up in jail in the new trailer of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, one of 2023’s most-awaited releases.

Featuring the film’s first single, Dance the Night Away by Dua Lipa along with Nick Minaj and Ice Spice’s cover of Barbie World by Aqua, the two-minute-39-second trailer gives a better look into the plot which follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) as she starts to become less and less doll-like. Barbie’s feet start flattening instead of being on her tiptoes, and she starts having an existential crisis and falls off the roof of her house instead of flying down.

The doll ends up taking help from Kate McKinnon’s Barbie, who looks like she has been ousted from Barbie Land for not being as Barbie-ish as she is supposed to be. Margot’s Barbie ends up taking her advice eventually and travels to the real world with Ryan’s Ken by her side.

The real world, however, isn’t as hunky-dory as Barbie Land and the dolls walk into jail after Margot’s Barbie punches a guy for touching her inappropriately. The Mattel CEO — played by Will Ferrell — also finds out about Barbie being out in the real world and will do anything to put her ‘back in a box’.

“To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken,” read the synopsis released by Warner Bros.

Directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Greta and Noah Baumbach, Barbie boasts an ensemble cast of Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Ritu Arya, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Simu Liu, Scott Evans and Ncuti Gatwa among others.

Barbie is scheduled for a July 21 worldwide release.
