Deepa Mehta has gone ahead and replaced Amitabh Bachchan with Akshay Kumar in her ambitious film on the 1914 Komagata Maru tragedy that demonstrated the racist policies of the then Canadian government. No, it had nothing to do with the Big B’s stomach pain. The official word is that Deepa dropped Amitabh saying that she needed someone with a Canadian passport and Akshay has one! But the buzz is that Akshay’s friend Ajay Virmani is the producer of the film. Virmani owns a big cargo airlines in Canada, sponsors the Toronto Film Festival and is said to have a hand in Water’s Oscar nomination. No wonder Akshay was the chosen one for this big period flick.
