Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt are coming together on screen, it’s now been confirmed.
2 States director Abhishek Varman will direct Kalank, an epic drama set in the 1940s, and will star Madhuri, Sanjay, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Aditya Roy Kapur.
Ideated by Karan Johar and his late father Yash Johar 15 years ago, the film will now release on April 19, 2019. The project will mark the collaboration of Fox Star Studios, Dharma Productions and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.
Madhuri and Sanjay acted in a series of hits in the nineties — Saajan, Khal Nayak and Thanedaar among them — and were also rumoured to have been in a relationship. Their last film together was Mahantaa in 1997.
The project had earlier been planned with Sridevi but following her sudden death in February this year, the film’s announcement was deferred. It was Sridevi’s daughter Janhvi Kapoor who revealed Madhuri’s entry via an Instagram post a few weeks ago.
Confirming the development, Karan Johar said: “Kalank has been an emotional journey for me. The germ of an idea that I had nearly 15 years ago... a film that was in a pre production stage helmed by my father... I am now proud to pass it on to the extremely capable and visionary hands of our director Abhishek Varman! A beautifully structured story by Shibani Bathija and an exceptionally fluid narrative and screenplay by Abhishek.”
He also tweeted: “Proud & excited to announce our EPIC DRAMA #KALANK.”
Sajid Nadiadwala said: “On April 18, 2014, 2 States had released... On April 18, 2018, Kalank begins its journey. This multi-starrer with a story (to match) will cross all borders, under the capable direction of Abhishek Varman. It be historic in the true sense of the word.”
