Bowling a B-town maiden over

It’s officially Virushka now. Like any other busy young couple, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, both 29, took a break from their jobs to have a dream wedding. As cricket and Bollywood score a bona fide biggie, here’s a throwback to some cricket-Bolly jodis that did or did not quite make a match of it.

Sharmila Tagore-Tiger Pataudi

The originals. The Bong bombshell met the blue-blooded cricketer in 1965, got hitched to him in 1969 and post-wedding delivered some of her career-best films such as Daag, Chupke Chupke, Amar Prem, Mausam, Namkeen and more, and Satyajit Ray classics such as Aranyer Din Ratri and Seemabaddha. The Nawab stood rock-solid on the crease as his Begum batted a long and fabulous Bollywood innings.

Anju Mahendru-Garry Sobers

They could have been the originals but for fate. A teenage Anju met legendary West Indian cricketer Sir Garfield St Auburn Sobers during the Caribbean tour of India in 1966-67, and the dashing duo apparently fell for each other. In his autobiography, Sir Garry remembers his relationship with Anju with fondness, though he says that if he had taken her to England for marriage as he intended, he would have had to deposit “a certain amount of money in the Reserve Bank as a sort of dowry”. Eventually the geographical distance took its toll and the couple soon called it quits. Though the legendary cricketer says that in 1969, when he got engaged to his former Australian wife Prue Kirby, he called Anju for her permission.

Neena Gupta-Viv Richards

The arthouse and television actress and the dashing Caribbean legend were smitten by each other in the 1980s. They never married, but the couple had a lovely daughter Masaba, who’s grown up to become a fashion designer.

Amrita Singh-Ravi Shastri

The dazzling star and the lanky all-rounder were the It Couple of the 1980s and even posed for magazines arm-in-arm before they parted ways.

Zeenat Aman-Imran Khan

If she was Miss Bollywood Bombshell, he was the big daddy of all Khans. The rumoured affair between Zeenat Aman and Imran Khan ruled tabloid gossip in the late ’70s and early ’80s. But the whirlwind romance did not last long.

Reena Roy-Mohsin Khan

This blockbuster actress was apparently nursing a wounded heart over a failed romance with the Bolly Shotgun when the Pakistani all-rounder bowled her over. They got married in 1983, he tried his luck in Bollywood with mixed results, they had a daughter. But the marriage did not last and Mohsin went back to Pakistan and remarried.

Sangeeta Bijlani- Mohammad Azharuddin

He was married, she had come out of a high-profile Bollywood relationship with Salman Khan. But, the Tridev girl and former Miss India and the dapper Hyderabadi cricketer listened to their hearts and got hitched in 1996. Sangeeta stood by Azhar through his career highs and lows, especially the BCCI ban over a match-fixing allegation in 2000. But the fairytale partnership ended in 2010.

Geeta Basra-Harbhajan Singh

Heroine to Emraan Hashmi in a couple of films, Geeta was known more for dating the leading spinner than for her movies. They finally married in 2015 and had a baby daughter a year after.

Hazel Keech-Yuvraj Singh

The southpaw who won countless hearts for his brutal stroke play and battle with cancer had link-ups with Bolly beauties such as Minissha Lamba, Kim Sharma and Deepika Padukone but romped home with Brit-born Bolly actress Hazel Keech of Bodyguard fame who changed her name to Gurbasant Kaur after their 2016 wedding!

Sagarika Ghatge-Zaheer Khan

When the affable pacer bowled over the Chak De! girl, no one was surprised. The couple tied the knot in November and their honeymoon pictures in Maldives are giving the rest of us serious relationship goals!
