Fair is foul, and foul is fair. That summed up director-actor Rajat Kapoor’s interpretation of Macbeth as clowns went on to tell the grim tale of tragedy brought on by unbridled ambition in What is Done, is Done at GD Birla Sabhagar on December 4, which was also the production’s premiere show.

Brought to Calcutta by Centre Stage Creations as part of Sabhagar Theatre Festival in association with t2, What is Done, is Done had Ranvir Shorey, Kalki Koechlin, Vinay Pathak and Tillotama Shome staging Kapoor’s modern take on the Shakespearean tragedy along with Sheena Khalid, Jim Sarbh and Sujay Saple.

Ranvir played Macbeth or ‘Macky B’, the Scottishman dressed less like an army general and more like a briefcase-toting trader who needs to constantly check his cellphone for SMSs.

You got the sense that this story was not just about a murder committed in a grand old castle but also a modern tale of brutal career goals, corporate rivalry and poaching. Kapoor drove home the point by making Macky B wear a cap with ‘CEO’ written on it, instead of a crown, after he takes the throne having killed Duncan.
