A cafe? A boutique? Well, Wabi sabi is both!

Hidden in one of the bylanes of Southern Avenue, Wabi Sabi is a dreamy place where you can unwind with your folks after a long day or relax with a book in the corner over cups of coffee and nutritious vegetarian dishes.

Hidden in one of the bylanes of Southern Avenue, Wabi Sabi is a dreamy place where you can unwind with your folks after a long day or relax with a book in the corner over cups of coffee and nutritious vegetarian dishes.

“The name ‘Wabi Sabi’ means ‘finding beauty in imperfection’ in Japanese. We friends were thinking of opening a cafe in late 2015... something out of the box. The name was proposed by one of the co-owners as it synced with what we had in mind. Then we got in touch with Bidyut Roy, a friend famous for his eco-friendly architecture, who gave shape to our dreams. Our aim was to give a natural and local flavour to the cafe. We are planning a separate organic menu soon,” said Falguni Bhatt, co-founder.

Here are a few things, on and off the table, that caught our eye at Wabi Sabi that blends the natural with contemporary designs.

What: Wabi Sabi
Where: 10 Dr Sarat Banerjee Road, (lane adjacent to Marco Polo on Sarat Bose Road)
When: 11.30am to 10pm on weekdays,11am to 10.30pm on weekends
Meal for two: Rs 800-plus

The Gluten-free Momos were a win for us! Made with potato starch instead of the usual flour, here’s the dim sum for all those allergic to gluten. It keeps the calories at bay and comes with two kinds of fillings — spinach corn and mixed veggies. Dip them in the regular spicy sauce or the milder mint chutney.
