Ritu Kumar closed the ‘Sustainable Fashion Day’ or Day 2 of Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2020 by showcasing her environment-friendly collection Nature’s Origami in collaboration with Austrian fibre brand Lenzing Ecovero. Held at LFW’s new experimental space, The Atelier, the collection had her iconic prints, made of sustainable fabrics in vibrant and offbeat hues. Ranging from dresses, kaftans, coats, trousers, skirts, jackets, and lungis, the collection was inspired by themes of tribal and contemporary art forms and prints. With silhouettes inspired by origami, the collection looked like a perfect mix of ethnic and urban chic.

Designer speak: “It’s good to be back. One of the reasons why I’ve been absent at LFW is because it used to clash with Paris Fashion Week. But today is an exception because it is about sustainability and I’m beginning to worry how much fast fashion we are doing in India and we cannot afford to. This country of all countries, we have so many options and we shouldn’t say no to any endeavours that’s moving towards sustainability,” said Ritu.

When asked about which fabrics can be used for sustainability, Ritu said: “Any fabric that’s not manufactured through a man-made process. Anything that is natural or organic has the possibility for it to decay, anything that is synthetic doesn’t decay and you’re leaving a very bad footprint.”

Showstopper speak: “She’s (Ritu Kumar) seen me as a little girl, so it actually means a lot to me to be here today for the finale of the Sustainable Fashion Day. I think sustainability is a way of life and it’s a choice that we make. People keep talking about trends but that’s the only trend that should stay forever because it is how we have always been as a country and how we should always be. I find we are very rich as a country and whatever is indigenous and what is made by hand by the craftspeople, what is natural, that is what is eternal and we should take a lot of pride in it,” said Aditi.

“Aditi is the epitome of somebody who doesn’t need to be taught about ecology. She breathes it, she understands it and it’s one of her characters,” added Ritu.

Day 3 of Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2020 saw designer Gaurang Shah collaborating with Lakme Salon to showcase his collection Garam Masala, making it his 17th season at LFW. His showstopper Tabu, who looked ethereal, recited deep and meaningful poetry about the role of women, as the models walked the runway.

The collection that ranged from peplum blouses, saris, floor-length kurtas and anarkalis, were made from fabrics from almost every state of India. Models were also seen flaunting bright red streaks on their hair, clearly inspired from the ‘garam masala’ theme. Tabu looked gorgeous in a black sari with a gold border, made of kanjeevaram and patan patola. The best part of the show was when Gaurang’s daughters, too, took the stage to showcase the collection.

Showstopper speak: “I’m very happy and honoured that Gaurang thinks I complement his clothes. His clothes complement me beautifully. This is the third time and I’m most comfortable walking for Gaurang because of the clothes, his craftsmanship. He’s also a fellow Hyderabadi so there is a deep connection! I really don’t feel like I’m at work, I just wear some beautiful clothes and I stand there. Today, I did something extra. I recited some poetry and I had to time it properly,” said Tabu.
