Word lovers would have to think and put their English vocabulary to test to solve these and more such riddles in the Indian Crossword League (IXL 2013), a first-of-its-kind puzzle contest in the country.

“The event has been christened IXL 2013. The league is an individual crossword solving competition to be played in a round-robin league format,” said Kushagra Singh, the director of EXTRA-C, the group organising the event.

The pan-India event to mark the centenary of crosswords kicked off at 10.30am today. Enthusiasts need to register at http://ixl.crypticsingh.com. Eight weekly rounds would be held online from October to December. The participant with the fastest fully correct entry will be awarded 100 points, which would keep descending till the 100th correct entry is awarded one point. A leader board would be maintained giving rankings based on added scores each week.

The top five scorers from the weekly rounds would compete in an offline national grand finale to be held either in Patna or in New Delhi on December 21 — the hundredth anniversary day of the game.

At the launch of IXL 2013, agriculture department secretary Vivek Singh said: “The idea is to promote Indian English vocabulary and popularise the game.”

“Eighty-two people registered within an hour of the launch. Prizes worth Rs 5 lakh are up for grabs. A certificate would be given to the top 50 winners in each round,” added Kushagra.
