Patna, July 3: Blame it on the nature or the civic body, the city is in a mess this monsoon. And you can feel it everywhere — from bedroom to streets.

Garbage is spilling onto streets from trash bins with the arrival of rains, making roads dangerously slippery. In the absence of a proper waste-disposal system in most parts of the town, the nauseating stench of rotten rubbish is making people jittery.

Be it Patliputra Colony or Kurji, the picture is same everywhere. Garbage strewn along the roads would welcome you to most of the localities, including Kidwaipuri, Boring Road area and Srikrishna Nagar.

“Garbage piling up near my home is usual. The situation has worsened after the arrival of monsoon. The litter is now spilling over from the garbage piles onto roads, making them slippery. Staying indoors is also a pain because of the nauseating stench of rotten garbage. We have to keep our doors and windows closed. Earlier, a tractor used to come to our locality to collect garbage once in three weeks. But that has stopped for the past three months,” K.D. Shahni, a resident of Patliputra Colony, said.

Cut to Sri Krishna Nagar. It is almost impossible to walk on the street connecting two roads (22 and 23). The entire stretch is full of mud, litter and garbage.

“The condition of the road started deteriorating last year after the contractor assigned the job of developing the park in front of my house dumped soil on it. The dumped soil was never carted away. With the advent of monsoon, the soil has scattered. The road is now full of slush. With the garbage strewn along the street, it has turned a haven for pigs, buffaloes and stray dogs. It is almost impossible for residents to walk out. It is equally unbearable to sit and eat inside the house because of nauseating stench,” Madhuri Sinha, a resident of the area, said.

Authorities, however, claimed that they had arrangements in place for regular disposal of garbage.

“We have arrangements for carting garbage from different areas on daily basis. There is hardly any area in the city where garbage remains dumped for more than a day. I am not aware of any place in the city plagued with spilling garbage issue,” Shashank Shekhar Sharma, the executive officer of New Capital Circle of Patna Municipal Corporation, said.

The city cuts a sorry picture, though.
