Varsity meet to fight graft

Patna, May 30: The Patna University (PU) syndicate meeting scheduled for Tuesday is going to be a stormy session, as many syndicate members are up in arms against the university administration’s failure to check corruption.

Though the members have not received an official agenda from the varsity till now, issues pertaining to teachers, varsity employees and students will be raised. The issue of reinstatement of suspended teachers will also figure in the meeting.

According to sources, the issue of reinstatement of Matuknath Choudhary, the suspended teacher of BN College and other teachers who were suspended or dismissed by the varsity administration is going to figure in the meeting. Matuknath Choudhary, who taught Hindi at BN College and became popular as “love guru”, was dismissed from service for violating the service code of conduct in July 2009.

Sources said the issue of Matuknath’s suspension is with the chancellor and the chancellor has approved Matuknath’s reinstatement. The issue of reinstating Asim Lal Chakraborty, the course co-ordinator of masters in business administration (MBA), and P.C. Verma will also be raised.

Moreover, the issue of large-scale manipulation in the BEd entrance examination in 2009 and 2010 is also going to be raised. In the examination, more than the sanctioned number of students were admitted and there was also a manipulation of the marks awarded in the entrance examination.

Sudhakar Prasad Singh, a syndicate member, said: “The financial irregularities in construction and renovation of colleges and hostels will also be raised at the meeting.” Singh added that for the fiscal year 2009-10 and 2010-11, the varsity received Rs 150 crore for modernisation and renovation of the building but apart from few renova- tion work, nothing else was done.

In the last syndicate meeting in March, it was decided that a committee of varsity building committee will be formed to be headed by Patna Women’s College principal Sister Doris D’Souza, but the committee is yet to take shape.

In the last syndicate meeting, the issue of removal of PU examination controller D.N. Sharma was raised but no action was taken in this regard.

The issue of teachers’ promotion and pending dues will also be raised in the meeting. In the last syndicate meeting, the issue of new pay fixation of university teachers and non-teaching employees according to University Grants Commission recommendations was a major issue.
