Home décor, garments, handicraft and jewellery flew off the shelves at Mahila Udyog Mela over the past five days and the proof lies in the till.
Bihar Mahila Udyog Sangh, the organiser, opened the fair last Thursday. At its close on Monday, at least Rs 90-lakh worth items had been sold.
Businesswomen came for the fair from different states, including Bengal, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. One of the entrepreueners even came from Lahore.
The items on sale — edibles, home décor, garments, handicraft, and jewellery — were all made by the woman entrepreneurs.
Pushpa Chopra, the president of Bihar Mahila Udyog Sangh, said: “It’s been 20 years we started this fair to give women entrepreneurs a platform to sell their products. Every time we get a good response from the people as the items are reasonably priced.”
Amrita Singh, who runs a cotton production unit in Fatuha, came to the fair for the first time this year. The experience left her happy. She said: “I had leggings, Patiala suits and scarves on sale. Customers of all ages came to my stall and went away satisfied.”
Calcutta’s Santosh Benani came to the fair with metal ornaments and boxes for dry fruits — perfect for the time of the year when festivities are near.
Priya Gupta, a customer, said: “Dussehra is near and I did all my shopping from the Udyog Mela. The salwar suit pieces are on a par with what we get in the markets and are priced reasonably too.”
Pooja from Lahore came with her Anarkalis and suits with glitter and zari works. Pallavi Ranjan, who owns a gallery on Fraser Road, made customers happy with her home décor items ranging from Rajwada furniture and lamps.
