Patna, Sept. 30: Central University of Bihar (CUB) has decided not to move out of Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) campus in the state capital, even as the September 30 deadline set by the latter expired today.
BIT Mesra had asked CUB to vacate its premises by today so that the institute’s courses can be run on its Patna campus. “We have sent a letter to the BIT administration in response to their letter asking us to vacate its premises. However, we have not received any replies so far,” CUB vice-chancellor (VC) Janak Pandey said.
He pointed out that the CUB is not in a position to vacate the premises as it could put the future of the 170 students studying in the university at stake.
CUB was set up in 2009 by an act of Parliament after which it had been functioning from the BIT Patna campus. Two years have passed since its inception but the Centre and the state government are still engaged in an argument over the location where the university campus should be set up. While the state government wants CUB to be set up in Motihari, the Centre wants a campus closer to Patna.
The CUB administration has paid Rs 62 lakh as rent to BIT Mesra for running the university on the institute’s Patna campus.
Sources told The Telegraph that BIT Mesra directed the CUB to vacate the premises at the behest of the state government so the university now does not have an option but to shift to Motihari.
Meanwhile, B.N. Giri, the director of BIT Patna, said it has “no role” in the letter sent by BIT Mesra to CUB.
A CUB official said: “According to the act of the CUB, the state government should have shown three sites where the university’s own campus should be constructed. However, the state government is sticking only to Motihari.”
Despite its problems, CUB has recruited 11 new permanent faculty members for five subjects.
Moreover, the university had also placed more than 70 per cent of the students of the first batch of students of masters degree in development studies, which was started by the university in 2009.
Classes at CUB were conducted according to normal schedule today.
