Students of Sri Arvind Mahila College would be able to hone their cricket and volleyball skills at the stadium on the campus from next month.

While work on the ground is still on, the stands are complete. The college principal said the stands would be painted in the four house colours.

Arrangements for light around the stadium are yet to be completed.

Asha Singh, the principal, said: “The stadium will be complete in a month. The stands are ready. They would be painted in colours of the four houses — red, green, blue and yellow. The girls can sit according to their houses and cheer their teams. Painting the stands in different colours would also make the stadium colourful and attractive. I am waiting to see the complete stadium.”

Babita Kumari, a second-year bachelor of computer applications student with a knack for carom, is happy with the plans for the stands.

“We would be able to cheer the participants from our houses and they, in turn, can see all of us at a glance. Once the stadium is ready, I would like to take part in badminton and athletic events.”

The 100ftx44ft stands will accommodate 1,500 girls at a time. The ground is around 225ftx120ft.

The stadium is being constructed with Rs 68 lakh provided by the University Grants Commission.

The Telegraph had reported in January last year that the UGC had sanctioned funds to the institution. Construction had started last year and was expected to be complete by March, 2012. However, the project was delayed.

Singh said: “We are planning to organise sport events such as cricket, volleyball, basketball, ball badminton, badminton, kho-kho and kabaddi at the stadium.”

Premi Kumar, the sports in-charge of the college, said: “In 2005, our students had won the kho-kho championship in an inter-college tournament. Constructing the stadium would provide the girls an opportunity to prove themselves.”

The college has also taken care of the students’ tastebuds. Behind the stadium stands, the college has constructed a cafeteria.

Singh said: “We have not forgotten about the tastebuds of our students. Three rooms are being converted into changing rooms, as many sport events would be organised after the stadium is complete.”

There will also be two washrooms for men and women behind the stands.
