| A grab of the website of Aryabhatta Knowledge University that shows IGIMS as its constituent college |
Patna, Dec. 16: Confusions regarding Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) medical college continue to puzzle its students. The latest is the college’s inclusion in the list of constituent institutes on the official website of Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU), a newly formed university in the state which comprises various institutes of technical education.
The AKU website, www.akubihar.ac.in, shows the IGIMS medical college — an autonomous institution — in its list of constituent medical colleges.
Experts said IGIMS — where medical college was started this year — was formed as an autonomous institution in 1983 under an Act and enjoys the status of a university in itself. This makes it technically impossible for AKU to include IGIMS as its constituent college unless the earlier Act is repealed or amended.
“IGIMS is a university in itself and it is not possible to even transfer it to AKU through an executive order unless amendments are made to the original Act,” said a senior official in the health department.
Students, meanwhile, are confused. “I have been trying to find out details about the admission process in IGIMS medical college for the next academic session. There is already confusion over whether entrance for the MBBS course would be through a separate examination or through Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination. Now, its inclusion in AKU is even more confusing,” said Bhumika Pandey, a medical aspirant.
AKU vice-chancellor S.N. Guha, on the other hand, expressed surprise over the inclusion of the medical college under the university.
“There have been no notifications from the government in this regard. I do not know whether such information is being displayed on our website. I will get the matter checked,” he told The Telegraph.
IGIMS director Dr Arun Kumar said the matter has been brought to his notice and that the institution would get it clarified.
“There has been no official communication in this regard, we will find out what is the official stand,” he said.
IGIMS had earlier courted controversies after it decided to admit students through the second round of counselling of Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECE) after first inviting applications for an all-India-level entrance examination.
The matter was taken to Patna High Court, which first passed a stay on the admission process but later gave a go-ahead to the institution, paving way for admission on the 100 MBBS course seats.
The institution had decided to take admissions through the BCECE merit list, citing paucity of time to complete the admission process through a separate examination.
Sources said Medical Council of India has granted the institution the permission to run the medical college for one academic session at the end of which it will inspect IGIMS again.
