Two undertrials of Sasaram divisional jail in Rohtas, facing sedition charges, have tested HIV positive.
The senior officials of the jail were taken aback after the duo, aged about 50 years, were found HIV infected. The matter came to the surface during a special health check-up camp organised for the inmates on November 22.
The two prisoners hailing from Rohtas district have been segregated and lodged in a separate ward. A source said one of them was arrested from Rohtas in 2012 during a special drive launched against the Maoists by then superintendent of police Manu Maharaaj.
Sasaram jail superintendent Vijay Kumar Arora said a team of doctors of the jail was treating the two prisoners. The officials of the state AIDS Control Society also visited the jail and enquired about their health.
“Both the prisoners are undergoing treatment under the supervision of a medical board,” he told The Telegraph.
Arora said the family members of the victims had not been informed about their condition as it could create panic. “We shall shift them to other hospital for better treatment if required,” he said.
Inspector-general (prison directorate and correctional services) Prem Singh Meena said he was yet to go through the report submitted by the jail officials concerned. “But we have come to know about the matter from other sources,” he said, adding that instructions had been issued to all the jail superintendents to organise health check-up camps in their respective jails.
