Patna: Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, the leader of Opposition in Bihar, on Friday kept his Thursday promise of staking claim to form government in the state.

MLAs of Tejashwi's RJD, along with those of the Congress, HAMS, and CPI, spurred on by the developments in Karnataka where the governor invited the BJP to form the government despite not having majority, on Friday marched to the Patna Raj Bhavan demanding a floor test to form the Bihar government.

Tejashwi along with representatives of other political parties met Governor Satya Pal Malik and submitted to him letters of support for the RJD from the Congress, the CPI, and HAMS.

In the letter, the Opposition parties stressed that the RJD and the Congress should get the invitation to form the government in accordance with the SR Bommai vs Union of India judgment of 1994 as the RJD is the single largest party in the Bihar assembly and along with its allies is the largest bloc. The RJD has 80 MLAs, the Congress 27, HAMS 1, and the CPI 3 in the 243-member House.

The MLAs first gathered at Tejashwi's 5 Deshratna Marg bungalow from where they marched to Raj Bhavan shouting slogans against the BJP and chief minister Nitish Kumar. They marched from the back gate of the bungalow; the distance from the main gate is much longer and would be gruelling on a day the maximum touched 37.4°C.

They started at 12:45pm and reached Raj Bhavan at 1pm. Tejashwi, his elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav, Bihar Congress working president Kaukab Quadri, HAMS spokesperson Danish Rizwan and the CPI's Tarari MLA Sudama Prasad were allowed to meet the governor. They came out after 25 minutes.

"We want to thank the governor who gave us time and he heard us out carefully," Tejashwi said. "We told him that we are the single largest bloc in Bihar and we should be invited to form the government.... We told him that we have the numbers. He said that he will inform us after thinking over the issue."

Asked, Tejashwi said the governor did not give any timeframe and that they would wait for his response.

Tejashwi claimed that 111 MLAs marched on Friday, and that that many JDU MLAs are in "constant touch" with the RJD.

"We told the governor that he should uphold the spirit of the Constitution and allow us to show our strength on the floor of the House following the Bommai judgment and the recent decision of the Karnataka governor which has become the guiding principle in such cases," Tejashwi said.

The ruling JDU dismissed the episode.

"Tejashwi is immature and does not have political knowledge and all this parade is nothing but a drama to attract media attraction," said JDU spokesperson Neeraj Kumar.
