Taking a woman professor to police station at midnight has landed cops in a soup.

The State Human Rights Commission, Bihar, has issued a directive to Patna zonal inspector-general S.M. Khopre to submit a report regarding the action to take a former woman associate professor of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) to police station at midnight after she allegedly attem- pted suicide.

Sources said the commission has taken the stand after Syed Adib Alam, the chairperson of Bihar Pradesh Muslim Conference, made a complaint to it. The commission wrote a letter to the Patna zonal IG seeking explanation in the matter on August 12 and had asked the IG to submit his report within a month of receiving it. Khopre said: “I am out of station for the past eight days. I have no knowledge of any such letter. I can comment only after going through it.”

S.N. Jha, the chairperson of the commission, said: “When we receive a complaint, we seek a report. After going through the report, we take a decision. We have sought an explanation from the Patna range IG after we received a complaint. Further action would be based on the report.”

The former associate professor said: “I was illegally detained at the police station. The cops tortured me when I needed rest. I am happy that the commission has sought an explanation from IG.”
