Preparations are afoot at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University to revive the tradition of a convocation.

The last convocation was held in 2004 and it has been a decade since then.

While Governor D.Y. Patil would inaugurate the academic extravaganza, Goa Governor Mridula Sinha will be the chief guest at the event on November 13.

Proctor and spokesperson of the university Ajay Kumar Srivastava said vice-chancellor (VC) Pandit Palande had put forth a proposal hold the convocation to boost academics on the campus.

“The governor has given his consent to inaugurate the event,” said Srivastava.

“Earlier, the university had organised convocation in 2004 and since then no VC has made any initiative to hold the convocation despite popular demand aired during the meeting of the senate every year,” said senator Arun Kumar.

N. Fatima, a postgraduate student of English, said the convocation would help boost academics. Sources said there have been little or no academic activities in the varsity of late.

The convocation would be held at Langat Singh College. Municipal commissioner Himanshu Sharma, registrar Vivekanand Shukla and development officer Kalyan Kumar Jha inspected the college ground and expedited necessary arrangements. Sharma has ordered immediate repair of defunct streetlights near the college.

The registrar has requested to district magistrate Anupam Kumar to repair roads leading to the college. The DM has directed departments concerned to carry out the work.

Development officer Jha said the university has sought applications from 2012 and 2013 toppers to award degrees and medals at the event.
