Revamp music to varsity ears - Renowned cultural personalities, monsoon ragas mark walk back to renovated classrooms

Patna, July 26: Classrooms of the department of music at Magadh Mahila College were re-inaugurated today after a few months of renovation. The building is the oldest in the college.

Welcoming the guests, principal Dolly Sinha said: “The department of music had launched its masters in arts course last year. I am thankful to former principal Sukhda Pandey who is now the art, culture and youth affairs minister.”

Sinha added: “Though Magadh Mahila College began its journey in 1946, the institution started on this premises in 1949.”

Sinha took charge as principal in June 2009.

Sinha said: “I had four projects in mind when I joined the college. The first one was renovating the building of the music department, the second was repairing the main building, the third was inaugurating the building for vocational courses such as bachelor in business administration and the last one was inaugurating the girls’ hostel on the premises. The fund for the renovation of the building has been provided by the state government.”

Sinha said the administrative head of any institution should have the vision to take the institution forward. This, in turn, gives satisfaction and she was happy to see the classes being re-inaugurated.

The event was attended by the head of the department of music, Neera Choudhury, Anjana Ganguly, the former head of the department of music of JD Women’s College, flautist Ramaraman Bihari, renowned dancer Nagendra Mohini, vocalist, visiting faculty Chhaya Chaudhary, Aruna Choudhary, Asha Singh and others.

Final year students Pooja Jha and Tulika Gupta of the music department anchored the event. Cultural programmes were also presented on the occasion. Neera presented raga Des, one of the ragas of the rainy season.

The event was titled Malhar, which is a raga having 30 prakaar and symbolises monsoon.

The students presented four ragas of Malhar namely Miya Malhar, Gaud Malhar, Sur Malhar and Megh Malhar.

Ankita Kumari, a first year student of the institution, said: “I have been a part of the college for five years. In Intermediate, I had music as a paper and I graduated in the same subject. It’s great to see the building of our department re-inaugurated after renovation.”
