The Medical Council of India’s delay in granting a formal recognition to Aryabhatta Knowledge University has put pass-outs in the lurch, prompting the state to take up the matter with the Centre.
The delay has resulted in denial of admissions and jobs to the medics passing out of the health cradle in institutions outside the state.
“I completed my MBBS from Patna Medical College and Hospital this year. I wanted to join a Delhi-based hospital on a part-time basis as I am preparing for All India Medical Postgraduate Entrance Examination. I was shocked when the hospital denied me the job saying the university is not approved by MCI. I contacted some of my friends who faced a similar predicament. We decided to bring the matter to the notice of senior state officials,” said Abhishek Verma.
Uncertainty looms over the fate of students who have completed MBBS and postgraduation degrees from medical colleges in the state in the past two years. Even though the government has transferred all technical institutions, including government medical and engineering colleges, to the university, the MCI has not listed it as approved.
N.P. Yadav, the controller of medical examinations, health department, said: “Many medics, who have applied for higher studies and jobs outside the state are facing problems owing to the MCI’s delay. We have decided to seek the Centre’s intervention in the matter. We are writing to the Union health ministry and MCI to immediately sort out the issue as it is creating confusion among students, institutions and employers.”
He said the state government had first asked MCI to give its approval three years ago after a gazette notification was published regarding the university’s establishment.
“Students should not panic. It is a state university and MCI will eventually grant its approval to it. We will soon send a senior official to Delhi to take up the matter with the Union health ministry and MCI authorities,” he added.
University Grants Commission, however, has listed Aryabhatta Knowledge University as a constituent university on its website. The university had conducted MBBS examinations this year and issued degrees to pass-outs.
