The science and technology department on Monday ordered a probe against senior students of Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology (MIT) for their alleged involvement in ragging and assault on juniors.

A first-year mechanical engineering student, who was allegedly ragged and thrashed by seniors, had written to the department about his agony. The inquiry was ordered henceforth.

“The department, however, has kept the name of the complainant under wraps to save the victim from the wrath of seniors,” said MIT principal Anjani Kumar Nathani.

Members of the MIT disciplinary committee have been informed about the alleged ragging menace and have been directed to keep a strict vigil on seniors suspected to be involved in the incident.

“The identity of the deviant seniors is being ascertained after which action against them would be recommended,” said the MIT principal, who heads the committee.

A senior teacher of civil engineering said there was thin attendance of newcomers because many skipped classes apprehending ragging. The newcomers did not even shift to the hostel out of fear.

The terror has spread so deep that many freshers were staying away from the campus, giving classes a miss. In the past few days, trivial clashes and heated exchange of words between seniors and juniors have been reported.

Things have come to such a pass that the teaching and non-teaching employees are avoiding intervention, fearing that they would be roughed up by the seniors.

Taking note of the recent developments, the science and technology department has directed the MIT principal to seek help from the local administration and police to rein in the deviant seniors.

The principal said he has requested senior superintendent of police Jitendra Rana to free the campus of the ragging menace.

Confirming it, the SSP said he has directed the field police officers to keep tabs on the activities of the senior students and convince them to shun such activities.

“It is good if they mend their ways, else strict action, including FIRs, would be lodged against them,” added Rana.
