Patna, Dec. 1: Four walls cannot guarantee you safety in the state capital, neither can police, especially when they proceed on duty in an inebriated state.

Members of a family residing at Tirdhamaria locality under the Maalsalami police station in Patna City experienced horror of the worst kind when some men in uniform force their way into their house late on Wednesday night. The victims, six women and some children, are in a state of shock, many of them scared to even record their statement.

Senior police officers said some of the allegations made by the family members sound genuine and a detailed report in connection with the incident is being sent to Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Alok Kumar.

No male member was present in the house when six policemen from the Maalsalami police station knocked on the door of Abdul Zahoor, a kerosene dealer, around 11.30pm.

The cops, allegedly in an inebriated state, wanted to talk to Zahoor, who was attending a relative’s funeral at Kacchi Dargah in Patna City at that time.

“My mother, who is more than 75 years old, told the cops from the window that there are no male members in the house. She asked them to come in the morning and shut the window too. This agitated the cops and they became violent,” Zahoor said.

The cops then started to abuse the women in the family. “My mother immediately asked the girls to lock themselves up in another room. The cops started to knock violently on window with their rifle butts. Soon the window broke and they started pelting stones and smashed the vehicles kept inside. Then they broke open the main door,” Zahoor said.

By then, the noise alarmed the neighbours who assembled in front of the house.

“Seeing so many people, the policemen panicked. They told my mother to send me to the police station in the morning and then left in their vehicle,” Zahoor said.

Today morning, a group of around 200 men from the locality, went to the Maalsalami police station and staged a protest, demanding immediate action against the policemen involved in the “attack”.

When asked why police were looking for Zahoor, he said in 2009, he was made a witness in a case involving a fight between two neighbours.

“That year, I couldn’t be present in one of the court proceedings and the court issued a warrant against me. But I was granted a bail and I have the required documents to prove it. I am a family man and don’t have any criminal history. I am frightened now as the police can target me too,” Zahoor said.

D.N. Rai, the station house officer (SHO) of Maalsalami police station, said: “The police went to his (Zahoor’s) house and there was an altercation. There is a warrant against the man. The ladies were not opening the door.”

When asked why Zahoor had not been arrested , the officer did not have an answer.
