Bhagalpur, Nov. 1: Tension gripped Adampur locality last night after police allegedly delayed the arrest of a surgeon and his associates accused of trying to outrage the modesty of a woman.
Last evening, a woman, 22, a resident of Goshaidaspur alleged that Dr Mirtunjay Kumar, a surgeon at JNMCH and owner of Tapashi nursing home, tried to molest her.
The woman had a gallbladder operation on October 22. Sources said she visited Dr Mirtunjay yesterday to remove the stitches. According to the woman’s husband, the doctor and his employees tried to molest her. When the woman raised an alarm, the medico’s employees beat up her husband. Soon after, a mob gathered outside and ransacked the nursing home but the presence of police averted any major incident.
The kin of the woman also blamed Congress MLA Ajit Sharma of helping the doctor evade the police. When contacted, Sharma refuted the allegations. “I went there as I am the local MLA,” he said today.
Last evening, two FIRs were lodged. In the first, the victim stated the assault on her. Pawan, the doctor’s compounder, lodged the second FIR. He alleged that the woman refused to pay the outstanding amount of Rs 5,000. She had paid Rs 20,000 for the surgery. The FIR mentioned that the patient demanded Rs 5 lakh from the doctor.
Dr Kumar was not available for comment but his wife Dr Bibha Choudhary denied the allegation levelled against her husband. “This is a ploy by my husband’s rivals and some political leaders to malign his image,” she said.
Bhagalpur senior superintendent of police Vivek Kumar said the police have started investigation but no one has been arrested so far.
