| A photograph (above) clicked by an Indian Forest Service officer Sanjeev Kumar, originally from Gaya, has been selected for the Commonwealth Games 2014 to be held at Glasgow, Scotland. The picture, taken in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district, shows a woman selling different herbs in a rural market at Haldipokhar. Kumar is the conservator of forests in Jamshedpur. The snap has been selected through a photography competition on the status of forests in the Commonwealth countries and employment opportunities there as part of the Games. From at least 10,000 photographs received from the Commonwealth countries, 109 have been selected and kept in the Games’ online photo gallery. Kumar said: “Through the photograph, I have tried to give a message that even minor forest products can prove to be a source of livelihood for villagers. Photography is my passion. While visiting the forests, I come across several such situations that can send a message about conservation of forests to the society.” Text by Alok Kumar |
