Munger, April 29: Twelve villagers were injured after a bear entered Tetariya village in Jamui district from Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary on Friday morning.

Barhat police station house officer P.K. Dubey was also one of the injured. He was sent to Patna Medial College and Hospital (PMCH) for further treatment after being treated with first-aid at Jamui Sadar Hospital.

"The Barhat police station received calls from villagers around 6am, who claimed that 11 villagers were injured in the attack," Jamui superintendent of police Jayant Kant told The Telegraph . "When Dubey tried to scare the bear away, it pounced on him, injuring him badly. His leg got fractured in the attack. Later, the bear was shot dead by the policemen."

"Dubey fired four rounds from his service revolver to defend himself when the bear was attacking him but it failed to deter the bear," said sub-inspector Ram Pratap Paswan, who was an eyewitness to the incident.

"Finally, other policemen fired at the bear. The bear died after police personnel fired 14 rounds into it."

Munger divisional forest officer Neeraj Narayan claimed that the bear was attracted towards the village because of the noise and activities at a wedding last night.

"Bears are nocturnal animals and stay awake at night. They are attracted towards human population if there is light and activities," he said. "There was a wedding at Tetariya village last night, which attracted the bear. We will send a report regarding the bear's death with our monthly report to the headquarters."
