Patna: Police on Wednesday recovered the bodies of a teenaged girl and a youth, hanging from ceiling fans of a building at Ghosi village in Jehanabad district, around 60 km south of Patna.
The dead were identified as Prakash Kumar, 21, and Ayushi Kumari, 16 - residents of Ghosi under the jurisdiction of Parasbigha police station in Jehanabad district. The police suspected it to be a case of honour killing.
Residents informed the police early on Wednesday morning that bodies of a girl and her fiancée were found hanging from ceiling fans in the house of Shatrughna Singh. Family members had fled the spot by the time police arrived.
Family members of Prakash alleged that he was called by the girl's family and brutally assaulted, leading to his death. Later, they killed the girl and hanged them from fans to make it look like suicide.
Prakash's uncle Ramadhir Kumar told police that Prakash had told the family in the evening that he was leaving Patna for his native village. However, the next morning his body was recovered from the house of Shatrughna, whose daughter was in love with him for the past three years.
Jehanabad superintendent of police (SP) Shree Maneesh said, prima facie, it appeared to be a case of honour killing. The family members of the girl were absconding after the incident. "Blood stains were found in the room in which the youth and the girl were found hanging. The body of the youth bore external injuries," he said.
The SP said no suicide note was found in the room. The room has been sealed and forensic experts called to collect evidence. The bodies have been sent to the Jehanabad sadar hospital for post mortem, he said.
The police have launched raids to trace the family members of the girl.
