Growth of talented minds

Sri Arvind Mahila College students worked on intricate henna designs at a mehendi competition organised on the campus last Friday. The participants applied the designs on the palms of their friends. Intermediate arts student Chandni Kumari was adjudged the winner from among 50 students who participated in the contest. Navjay Kumari and Neha Kumari bagged second and third spots, respectively.

Two days before the mehendi competition, the college's women empowerment cell organised a free eye check-up camp in collaboration with Vasan Eye Care Hospital.

Close to 100 students and teachers got their eyes checked as the doctors advised them to eat leafy vegetables to improve eyesight.

Coordinator of the cell Poonam Choudhary spoke to the students about the need for regular eye check-ups after the age of 40. Principal Usha Jha and faculty members Anjali Prasad, Kavita Sinha among others attended the programme.

Freshers' show

The education department of Patna Women's College organised a freshers' day programme on July 30 for the new batch of students. The theme of the programme was "The canvas of life - Jeewan ke Navras" and it started with the prayer song, Teri Hai Zameen Tera Aasman. An instrumental fusion performance followed soon after.

First-year students Mrinalini and Sneha recited poems in English and Hindi, while another qawwali performance staged by the first-year students received grand applause.

Apoorva danced to Kahe Chhede Mohe after which principal Sister Marie Jessie addressed students.

Trainee welcome

St Xavier's College of Education also organised Freshers' Day 2016 for its 29th batch of BEd trainees on Thursday.

The programme was not just a welcome for the newbies but also a platform for them to display their talents. So, both first- and second-year students came together as a team to showcase their artistic skills.

Father Joseph Maripuram, the rector of the college, principal Father Thomas Perumalil and faculty members Preeti Sinha, Kumari Veena and Rathan Kumar started the event with the lighting of the traditional lamp. The college choir presented a welcome song and first-year teacher trainees followed it up with a prayer dance.

Father Maripuram spoke about the Jesuit education system and the goal of educating new minds. He told the students to be aware of their purpose at the institution and to continuously strive towards your goal.

Father Perumalil lauded the trainees for their efforts and advised them not to leave any stone unturned to develop themselves. "The idea of this welcome or interface is to know each other, bring out talents, capacity and ability and to develop the spirit of team work," he said. "As teachers you will be looked upon to bring out the best in your own students and so you have to begin from yourself."

Talk on saint

MEd and BEd students of St Xavier's College of Education attended a talk on the life of St Ignatius of Loyola - the patron saint of the Jesuit society - on Saturday.

Father Premlal, director of audio-visual institute Ravi Bharti in Patna, was invited as chief guest at the programme aimed at acquainting the student-teachers with the life of St Ignatius.

BEd student Rachna Shree said: "I got to learn a lot about St Ignatius of Loyola, who is the founder of the world famous society, called the society of Jesus. The members of the Society of Jesus are popularly known as Jesuits. Today, Jesuits are engaged in different apostolic adventures in more than 15 countries in the world."

Shravani dance

Patna Women's College organised a Shravani dance competition to welcome monsoon on the campus on Thursday.

Close to 80 undergraduate students from various departments left the audience moved with their performance. Members of the All India Catholic University Federation started the programme with a dance to Rangilo sawan ayo re.

Head of mass communication department Minati Chaklanavis judged the participants with help from Sanskrit head of department Smita Kumari and head of communicative English and media studies Tauseef Hassan. Principal Sister Marie Jessie applauded the students for putting up the show and congratulated the winners.

First-year English student Aparna Jha said she looked forward to participating in the competition next year.
