Patna: Dense fog dimmed visibility and claimed 10 lives in different parts of the state in the past 24 hours, police said on Saturday.
The police said two youths died when a truck carrying sugarcane from Mainatand in West Champaran district fell on their motorbike on Saturday. Three others, who were riding another motorbike and trailing the deceased's two-wheeler, hit the truck and suffered serious injuries.
The truck, which was running at a speed of over 60km/hour, later dashed against the boundary wall of Mainatand police station, causing injuries to three policemen, including station house officer Rafikur Rahman. All the injured were admitted to the government hospital in Bettiah, the district headquarters of West Champaran.
The police identified the deceased as Mukesh Giri (20) and Roshan Giri (18), said to be residents of Nepal's Parsa district.
Later, the truck driver, Rahim Mian from Mishri Tola under the jurisdiction of Lauria police station of the district, was arrested.
A report from Gaya said the drivers of two trucks were killed and their cleaners were injured when they collided head-on near Sahia village on Gaya-Biharsharif road under the jurisdiction of Wazirganj police station in Gaya district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Pintu Yadav (32) and Waziruddin (45), both residents of Nawada district.
In Kaimur district, two persons died when a tractor carrying stone chips collapsed on them near Belao Bazar under the jurisdiction of Belao police station on Friday night. The dead were identified as Ramakant Bind (30) and Dharmendra Yadav (25) and were stated to be residents of Kusahi village of Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh.
In Madhubani district, two persons riding on a motorcycle were killed when a speeding sports utility vehicle hit their motorcycle on National Highway 67 near Mohan Bidhiyam village under the jurisdiction of Sakri police station on Friday evening.
One of the deceased was identified as Rajendra Sah (35), a resident of Madanpur Rataul village in Mahdubani district. The second was stated to be Sah's relative.
The bodies were sent to Madhubani Sadar hospital for post-mortem. Police said the SUV driver managed to escape after the mishap.
In Vaishali district, a middle-aged woman was knocked down by a speeding truck near Mahua turning in Hajipur on Friday night.
She was rushed to Hajipur Sadar hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The victim's identity is yet to be ascertained.
In yet another mishap, a 55-year-old man was crushed to death by an SUV near Kharuara village on the Bakhtiyarpur-Biharsharif road under the jurisdiction of Chero police outpost in Nalanda district on Saturday. Agitated over the incident, local residents blocked the road and disrupted traffic for over two hours.
The road blockade was removed after the intervention of senior police officers. The body was sent to Biharsharif hospital for autopsy. The deceased's identity is yet to be ascertained.
