Patna, May 21: With yet another accused in the murder of liquor dealer Saket Kumar Gupta surrendering on Saturday, only three more accused are on the run despite police failing to make any arrest till date.
Gupta, the cousin of a police officer in the director-general’s rank, was shot dead at Kumhrar Park on May 7. The police managed to catch two suspected assailants the same day. Sources in the police said with the mysterious death of Prem Singh, who was one of the named accused in the FIR, on May 9, the other accused preferred to surrender.
“On Saturday, Pankaj Singh secretly surrendered at the Ara civil court. Pramod Yadav, who was another named accused, surrendered at Patna City Civil Court on May 15. Pankaj is also a businessman. With the accused surrendering one after another, it seems that they have become scared following Prem’s death,” a police source said.
The source added that Pankaj would also be taken in police remand for interrogation.
Prem’s death has raised several questions with the sources indicating that Pramod, who has been taken in remand by the police, admitting that “he (Prem) had a major role in Saket’s murder”.
“Pramod said Saket was using his connections and a business tussle was on between him and Prem. With some raids at Prem’s shop, he allegedly planned Saket’s murder. But then Prem’s murder has given rise to a lot of questions. Saket had some highly placed contacts and Prem’s autopsy report revealed that he was tortured badly. His body was found near the Kumhrar Railway Crossing, which is barely half-a-km from Kumhrar Park. The recent surrenders could be out of fear of such a fate,” another police source pointed out.
